Gallery Statement
A child asked her father “Daddy, what is your job?” He answered “I teach adults to draw,” to which she replied “You mean they forget?”
We all have some sense of the importance of play among children. But it seems that we forget how important play is to adults. Most adults. Some are more fortunate, because they can take advantage of the language.
What Joshua Bell and Sir Simon Rattle do is called “play,” the former on one instrument, the latter on many at once. Actors play-act, and my dear friend Rick Foster writes plays.
So, having led a rather serious life in academe and business, I’ve decided as a senior adult to re-embrace play. Or to embrace it. It feels like the first time for me, and I go about it with great enthusiasm.
Fortunately, I recognize the difference between childish and child-like, and I am a great fan of the latter. There is a considerable distinction between having fantasies as a child, and later, as an adult, acquiring the skills to realize those fantasies.
Every one of the images in this portfolio is a mixture between reality and fantasy. If I were to ascribe proportional values, I’d say the latter is predominant.
So now you know what happens to me when my camera is in my hands and dreams are in my head. I play. This is my playground and my stage. I write my plays and perform them. You are the audience.
